Artist's Comments

Part of my A2 level project in 2007-8 with title "Power". My idea was to research the biblical myth of Behemoth, Leviathan and Ziz, the primordial lords of earth, sea and air respectively. There being a lot of debate about precisely what creatures they were, I went for "real" ones. (Hey, I would've gone for mythological and had a fething sea serpent for Leviathan but noo, my course was strictly observational.) I picked a South Devon bull belonging to our neighbour for Behemoth, a Harris hawk from a falconry show that came to our village for Ziz, and er, well we didn't have any orcas handy, so they came off the internet for Leviathan. :XD: But yeah, please don't debate what creatures I have used; B, L and Z are all mythological anyway, and I did my research and coupled it with a bit of artistic license.
So. These are photos of my artwork, so not as high-quality as a scan would have been, but they've been cleaned up as best I could, which is not very well in the case of the chalk stuff. I got 100% marks for this, pushing my previous B at AS up to an A for the whole A level.

*Fanfare* Final piece number 1! Not chronologically, but who cares about that. In the end, they were arranged vertically with Leviathan on the bottom, Behemoth above him and Ziz at the top, to echo the arrangement of their elements. (Ignore that water is, technically, above earth. Most people's natural inclination is to think of it as below, and in any case the creatures are more balanced this way.) A2, each one, so double the size of any of my prep images, but not the biggest I worked that year (exam work is upcoming).

I'm absurdly proud of all of the final pieces, and I personally feel I did the best I possibly could for each of them. Leviathan is the culmination of Power Orca 1, Power Orca 2 and Power Whirlpool. And I luffs him. x) Oh and...he's meant to be in the extreme foreground while the whirlpool's in the background so...don't worry that they're not actually interacting. :XD:

Thank you very much! :D I attribute the water to the art department's tiny little awesome piece of aqua chalk, it saved my proverbial butt. :giggle:

I can't believe there is not more comment! This is an amazing piece of art. The water as has already been said is amazing. You got the foam on the water off to a t! I love how you defined the muscles and bones in the orcas body too!

Thank you very much! :) I'm glad you liked the definition of its body, orca anatomy isn't exactly something I'm au fait on. xD And for the foam, all praise my lil' piece of light turquoise chalk, rest its soul. xDD
